FF – Their Future in Our Hands
Here is my quirky not-really-a-story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo comes from Fictioneers stalwart Sandra Crook.

Picture the scene. A sleepy English village. Ignore the French flag. The French flag is unimportant. This is a sleepy English village.
Concentrate instead on the loving couple, hand in hand, oblivious to anything but each other.
But what’s this? Suddenly a hundred Friday Fictioneererers Fictioneerrers Fiction Writers appear!
Maybe our couple will wander safely home for tea and crumpets. Maybe they will become innocent bystanders of a drive-by shooting. Or imagine, if you will, hordes of undead boiling forth to feast on their flesh.
We don’t know. We just don’t know.
Their future is in OUR hands.
Don’t cock it up.

Love it! That’s just too perfect. Given how exhausted I am this eve, if I try I will cock it up for sure. Yawn… or, I could just go inside, ignore the French flag, ignore the snooty French concierge at the front desk, Slide my key card in a door (any door, doesn’t matter) and crash in the nearest bed. Oops, looks like it’s occupied… oh, well, sleeping French never bothered me anyhow.

Ha, ha, I loved this. I had mutants in my story and the building was decaying. I didn’t even notice the French flag. You’re more observant. I always seem to miss some little detail. Good writing, Ali. 😀 — Suzanne

I started with the “sleepy English village”, suddenly noticed the flag, got a bit miffed and then decided to write it in 🙂

Lovely reflexive story there – including us all in the tale, like puppeteers squabbling over their dolls, yanking them this way and that, inventing ever more lurid tortures … Yep, that’s us! Great tale to raise a smile 🙂

Those poor people…. sucked into hundreds of fictional alternate universes. I hope they get to remember all of their experiences at the hands of the FF gang…
BTW, as I was reading this, I also noticed that the picture looks like it’s one large fake backdrop for a movie or stage play. Once you see that, you can’t unsee it…

No tea and crumpets, no drive- by’s. Instead we have terrorists and revolutionaries murdering the tourists, each other, or getting themselves shot — all for glory and a just cause. Morbid bunch, eh?

Well, I really liked your unusual take on this — very refreshing! Makes me want to write another tale, make them food editors on tour, sampling the local crumpet offerings for their latest cookbook. 🙂

I believe the correct collective noun would be Friday Fictioneers. Although in this case, I think you have formed a break-away sub-group, called the Friday MetaFictioneers. I imagine this breakaway group to be a lot like the Muskateers, or the Mouseketeers, if they had gone to uni and done a masters in “Fiction and Post-Modern Literary Theory.”

The best thing about a meta-story is that I don’t have to think of my own actual story.
That university course sounds interesting. Like you rock up 3pm, talk rubbish for an hour and then repair to the student union for drinks, I mean to discuss the day’s literary theories 🙂

I had the story half-written (set in a sleepy English village) and then noticed the darn French flag. So I found a way to mention it and get rid of it 🙂
