FF – A Safe-ish Place

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Nathan Sowers, Dawn Miller’s grandson.

I quickly wrote this in my lunch break so that I at least had something, but had no time to write anything else.

Have you ever woken up in the morning with little recollection of the night before? Was there perhaps a suspicious puncture wound on your neck?

Did you open your curtains to let the sunshine in, only for your head to burst into flames?

Did you check the fire damage in a mirror only to find you HAD NO REFLECTION?

If you’ve answered “yes” to all these questions, then Vampires Anonymous could be for you. If you’re newly turned and have nowhere else to go, pop along for a bite. You’re not alone!

Free blood and cookies at your first meeting!

Lot’s at stake being a vampire… take precautions against garlic, crucifixes and holy water.

I’m tempted by the free cookies.

  3. August 29, 2018 at 9:16 pm

    Oh shit!

  4. August 29, 2018 at 9:24 pm

As a matter of fact, that has happened! No reflection in my mirror! 🙂

I hope they have some blood pudding, yum!! 🙂

    • August 30, 2018 at 7:01 am

I bet they do! Fortunately we call it by its original name over here (black pudding) otherwise I probably would never have tried it. “Blood” pudding sounds too icky to we non-vampires 🙂

Maybe you should contact the people from Collinwood on ‘Dark Shadows’

    • August 30, 2018 at 7:03 am

I had to Google that but I did see the film years ago. It was great fun!

“Free blood and cookies at your first meeting!”

    Excellent line!

    See you —

Thanks! Free stuff always brings in the crowds.

  12. August 30, 2018 at 2:25 pm

    Yikes. Blood and cookies.

    I don’t think so, thank you 🙂

  13. August 30, 2018 at 2:30 pm

    Mmmmmmmmmmm, chocolate clot cookies!

    • August 30, 2018 at 3:48 pm

It’s that burst of flavour when a clot bursts against your tongue that makes them the choice for the discerning vampire.
      I feel a bit ill now…

  14. August 30, 2018 at 4:40 pm

Love the flier format – its so matter of fact about those strange beings – Vampires..Especially the last line – ‘ Blood and cookies’ ! Well done.

    • August 31, 2018 at 6:44 am

It’s important information for those who “live in the shadows” 🙂

    Dear Ali,

I’m usually not a fan of vampire stories but this one is hilarious. Love it!

    • August 31, 2018 at 1:17 pm

      Dear Rochelle,
I know you’re not a fan so I was quite curious to see what you’d make of it. I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂

  20. August 31, 2018 at 2:27 pm

Have been on the look-out for vampire tales and then two come along together. The exploding head sounds fun!

  21. September 1, 2018 at 2:47 pm

At last a story with a bite. Leaving that mirror outside is bad fang shui.

    • September 1, 2018 at 3:09 pm

      Haha, nicely punned (twice!) 🙂

  22. September 1, 2018 at 6:50 pm

    Actually, I thought I’d try Vampires Anonymous…

  23. September 1, 2018 at 10:12 pm

LOL…loved it. I’m so glad you had no time to write anything else. This one is a gem!

    • September 2, 2018 at 6:15 am

I had a couple of other ideas but had no time to try them out. This one worked out better than I expected when I was hammering it in and emailing it home, I’m glad you liked it!

Not bad for a quick lunch hour write! 🙂

    • September 2, 2018 at 5:43 pm

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it! I usually like to look at the picture first thing and then mull it over all day but things have just got too busy.

  26. September 2, 2018 at 12:52 pm

Yep, I’ve been to those places to give blood, free tea and biscuits. I wondered was the the only reason or was it to keep the long tradition of lore and fable about Vampires alive. I’ll admit some of the nurses did look a bit pale and kept out of the light.
    Good fun read.

    • September 2, 2018 at 5:44 pm

Now you know where all that blood ends up… I’m glad you liked it!

Love the personal ad format of this piece. Very humorous and clever.

  28. September 2, 2018 at 4:54 pm

Oh my goodness, so witty and as mentioned by others the ad idea was very creative. All done during your lunch … well done!

    • September 2, 2018 at 5:47 pm

Thanks! Once an idea pops into my head it only takes a few minutes to hammer it in 🙂 I’m glad you liked it!

I’m glad you liked it! Stuff like this is fairly easy to write – no characters to worry about, no descriptions required 🙂
