Sharing My World 29-07-2019

Here is my post for Melanie’s Share Your World.

Is it wrong to sell store-bought pastries at a bake sale?
Yes! Surely the whole point is that you bake something and then sell it? I know the proceeds usually go to charity, or the village hall or whatever, but if you’re going to buy a cake for £3 and sell it for £4, why not just cut out the middle man and donate the £1?

There’s a different name for places which sell mass-produced shop cakes. They’re called “shops”.

Have you ever interacted with the police?
Yes.

What will you remember most about this past year?
I can’t think of anything that really stands out. There was the awful couple of days of snow and the drive home.

Is it better to have fungus on your toes, your tongue, or your pizza?
The only place fungus belongs out of those choices in on a pizza, though I don’t generally have mushrooms on pizza myself.

What is one slang word that makes your skin crawl?
Not “skin crawl” as such, but I can’t get on with the word “sick”. It used to mean something pretty nasty but it’s now used for something amazingly good as well. So sometimes it’s hard to tell whether someone really loves or hates something.

I suppose it would make more sense to just donate the money, but there’s a tradition. You promise to bake and you have to bring baked goodies. It’s a “thing.”

It’s almost like a contract. It’s what people expect.

I notice you didn’t elaborate on interation with police. Most of us have , even to accept the dreaded speeding ticket, but still…now we can really imagine. 😉

I had no idea the word “sick” has taken such a sharp turn and gotten an odd meaning. That’s bizarre — another word that’s taken on a whole new meaning through the years. But current slang “life” is only a few years, so sick will be gone and “stuffy” will mean great, delightful.

I hope you enjoy the bake sale, I heard it’s going to be totally sick! Or make people sick. One of those 🙂

No doubt your interaction with the police involved pastry laundering, and this public service announcement about the evils of passing off store bought pastries at bake sales was part of your community service punishment…

Exactly right. I was caught with three Chelsea buns in my possession. One over the legal limit.

Do share with the “Yank” what a Chelsea bun IS? I’ve heard the term but nobody ever said what it was really,. I suppose Google could come to my rescue, it found out what “bubble and squeak” was… Hmm

Here’s what wiki has to say:
“The Chelsea bun is a type of currant bun that was first created in the 18th century at the Bun House in Chelsea, an establishment favoured by Hanoverian royalty, which was demolished in 1839. The bun is made of a rich yeast dough flavoured with lemon peel, cinnamon or mixed spice.”

Me too. Fungus (in mushroom form) should only be on a pizza, where it belongs.

Thanks Drailman for providing a humorous twist to Share Your World! Yes, the fungus among us is the MUSHROOM..which goes on pizzas, although if one were of a more *ahem* adventurous state of mind, one might put some on their toes I suppose. The bake sale thing caused a bit of a tiny fluff I see. Over ‘here’ (across that big pond some call an ocean) bake sales are mainly for charity or for schools hoping to raise money for some project or trip. In certain small towns in Utah it’s a badge of honor to bring ‘home made’ and the ladies (and some gentlemen) almost compete for who does the best job too. I’ve seen slightly bad natured rivalry at the local scouts’ benefit (hosted each year) over certain ladies’ pies and bread. Me? I’m a so/so baker at best and while I wouldn’t blatantly bring a shop bought treat, I might. Especially if my own effort turned out so poorly that even the dog wouldn’t eat it. I wouldn’t take credit though. I think that’s the bit where people get snippy – if some twerp claims a shop bought item is “theirs”.

We don’t have “bake sales” as such a big thing (in the circles I move in anyway), so it would normally be something where you’d be expected to actually make your own. Like at the village fete or whatever. Certainly, claiming shop-bought as your own is just downright dishonest 🙂

I’d say English language is convenient language; one word has so many different meanings. It is also often confusing, even sly. 😊 By the way, Amazon lowered my book price during ‘Free book’ period, instead of giving it away for free. So I’ll send you the ebook Mystery Man’s Daughter as a gift from me if you don’t mind. But I need your email address.
