FF – Hobby

Here’s my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Jean L. Hays.

Just a silly little one this week.

“Ooh, what shall I sew?”

“Ugh. Another fad.”

“Hey, men can sew too!”

“Yep. But remember last time? You bought sixteen cookery books and never even managed beans on toast. Come on, I’ve arranged a hobby you’ll love!”

They entered a room. Huge TV, sound system, home cinema, games console, and who’s that on the sofa? Yes, yes it is…! Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Alba, beckoning, beckoning…

Hey, wait a minute.

This is a dream, isn’t it?

Disappointed, draliman woke up, determined that today he would conquer beans on toast. Possibly, if he were feeling adventurous, with cheese on top 😊

Today beans on toast. Tomorrow chateaubriand

  2. October 23, 2019 at 7:12 pm

Keep dreaming, you never know! Good fun 🙂

  3. October 23, 2019 at 7:12 pm

Ha ha – you should definitely add the cheese and pop it under the grill. Fun story!

Yeah, definitely cheese is required 🙂

  4. October 23, 2019 at 7:18 pm

In the next dream Draliman enrolls in Le Cordon Bleu and creates amazing meals! 🙂

  5. October 23, 2019 at 7:20 pm

No matter how improbable, beans on toast is much more likely than that other dream. Quite fun.

  6. October 23, 2019 at 7:35 pm

You will manage it today… if not you can eat cold beans out of the can.

Gotta hate waking up with that dream awaiting you, eh. Great story!

  8. October 23, 2019 at 8:16 pm

Haha, a nice funny story today, I enjoyed it.

You can get some of that heinz five beanz stuff if you’re feeling classy.

    • October 24, 2019 at 7:38 am

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it! Ooh, classy baked beans 🙂

  9. October 23, 2019 at 8:55 pm

    Dear Ali,

Sorry about that in home cinema and all…enjoy your beans on toast. 😉
Of course men sew. My grandfather was a tailor and made all my mother’s clothes when she was a girl. 😀

    • October 24, 2019 at 7:41 am

      Dear Rochelle,
I did quite well at sewing at school! Beans on toast, here I come 🙂

Beat an egg, add it to the beans and cook gently like you would scrambled eggs. Serve on toast for a filling breakfast…or dinner…or lunch. Easy and delish. 😀

  11. October 24, 2019 at 6:48 am

    That was a good dream!!
Worked up an appetite for the beans I hope! 😛

  12. October 24, 2019 at 9:30 am

Nice story, Ali. Gentle humour, but sharply told – good work!

    • October 24, 2019 at 11:37 am

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂

  13. October 24, 2019 at 11:20 am

And here I thought Chef Draliman was already the master of pizza… and he can’t even do beans on toast? Bah!

    • October 24, 2019 at 11:38 am

Those beans can be tricky, and getting the toast just right? Impossible.

  14. October 24, 2019 at 12:43 pm

Nothing wrong with beans. Especially cold beans. Good one.

    • October 25, 2019 at 6:58 am

Staple student fare – cold beans mixed with chunks of blue cheese and Tabasco sauce 🙂

  15. October 24, 2019 at 1:56 pm

Sew…..what time shall I come round?

  16. October 24, 2019 at 2:26 pm

Beans on toast are a healthy meal – just eat an apple for dessert.

    • October 25, 2019 at 6:59 am

      Fruit’s taking things a bit too far…

  17. October 24, 2019 at 2:39 pm

That’s better than the dreams I have! Perhaps I should stop looking at my cookery books!

    Here’s my story!

  18. October 24, 2019 at 4:09 pm

So funny, and I loved your insertion of yourself in the story.

  19. October 24, 2019 at 5:16 pm

This feels very familiar. Each of us has our momentary enthusiasms and epic failures, resulting from our inability to stick With it. A way Nature has, of moving us along to the next thing!

  20. October 24, 2019 at 7:18 pm

Those girls, I’d like to meet Drew Barrymore, not sure about the others, but always add a little butter and curry powder to BOT, thats my advice! Good stuff and delightfully stereotypical of us males!

  21. October 24, 2019 at 8:02 pm

Gotta start small… beans on toast is manageable… having those ladies on your couch is definitely dreaming in Technicolor…

  22. October 24, 2019 at 9:35 pm

So sorry for the disappointment. Unfortunately, too many of us wake up to reality.
Which is why I only write in fiction, I never have to wake up. ;0)

  23. October 25, 2019 at 6:36 am

Frozen microwave dinner might be easier… just don’t leave it in too long and take the plastic off – oh dear it just got hard! 😀

    • October 25, 2019 at 11:51 am

I tried a frozen microwave dinner once. I was terribly disappointed in it 🙂

Men can certainly sew, though I’ve not met many. Beans on toast is definitely manageable and sounds tasty to me, especially with the cheese on top. Fun story!

    • October 27, 2019 at 4:37 am

I can sew simple repairs but rarely have the need. I learned beans on toast with cheese at university, as many did 🙂

      • October 27, 2019 at 7:26 pm

I was good at PB & J crackers in university with a bit of fruit on the side to make it healthier. Still not much of a cook. =)

Life is a series of recipes. One ingredient (step) at a time. Good dream/story.

    • October 27, 2019 at 4:42 am

Nice analogy! I’m glad you liked the story 🙂

OK good, now go to the kitchen and make something besides beans on toast! lol

I liked the second option with TV better. Why does Draliman want to go back to cooking?

    • October 27, 2019 at 5:46 pm

Sadly the TV option was but a dream.

  27. October 27, 2019 at 7:24 pm

You realised you were dreaming, so you should’ve tried to continue dreaming and control the outcome. Isn’t that what lucid dreaming is all about? 😉
Good luck with beans on toast. 🙂

    • October 28, 2019 at 7:57 pm

I used to be able to lucid dream, back when I was a kid. I used to wake myself up to prove to people in my dream that it was a dream… I could have had much more fun as an adult 😉

You woke yourself up to prove to people in your dream that it was a dream? Right… makes perfect sense… not. 😁

Dream on, Draliman, one day you manage to sew… or cook anything…if only in your dreams😹Extra Pawkisses for now🐾😽💞

  29. October 28, 2019 at 3:53 pm

You have unmatched humour, Ali… great story👍

  30. October 29, 2019 at 3:29 pm

    LOL…another day in the life…

  31. October 30, 2019 at 12:44 pm

    You be careful…
