FF – The Tree
Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Liz Young.
In a forest of greens and browns, The Tree stood proud. Grey, sickly, it had abided long centuries. Many were the theories.
Had it died long since, but not yet crumbled to dust?
Could it be that dark Magicks flourished within the ground, poisoning its roots? If one were to venture too close, might the dark spells cause oneโs head to explode?
Was the tree perhaps cursed, and to linger in its vicinity might cause oneโs private unmentionables to wither and die?
One thing we know for sure, and one thing only.
It makes for a bloody good photo.

My first thought was, “I want to play in that.” After reading “to linger in its vicinity might cause oneโs private unmentionables to wither and die” I’m not so sure.

Yeah, not sure it’s worth the risk.

Ah, but a photo of WHAT?

Obviously a… thing… tree thing… or something.

Fantastic! I can see a figure, legs akimbo, guarding the grotto beneath. His unmentionables seem to be missing!

He lingered too long. Now he’s un-manned and doomed to guard it forever.

A bit of a shame, but never mind, at least no-one died! Yet ๐

I’m not going to risk my unmentionables to find out more!

Very wise, it’s not worth the risk!

Well, that WAS a surprise. No evil squirrels lurking in the twisted roots and branches? That’s most unlike you Ali, but you certainly built the suspense up beautifully ๐ ๐

It might be a portal to a realm full of evil squirrels… ๐ฎ

It’s a good thing someone thought to take that picture of the awesome looking tree before it got bulldozed and turned into Puppies on a Roll…

There seems to be a lot of concern over unmentionables, but I was already fleeing from exploding head!

Exploding head. Withering unmentionables. Exploding head. Withering unmentionables. Not sure which I find more chilling ๐ฎ

That explains a lot, I must have lingered in the vicinity of it!

I certainly prefer a photo to an exploding head or withering unmentionables. Great fun.

Yes, much better. Photos to be taken from a distance via zoom lens ๐

it’s its clamor for attention that keeps the tree alive for many more photo shoots to come. ๐

Exploding head or withering unmentionables? I think I’ll stay away. Green or grey, it certainly does make a good photo.

It does, and staying away is a good plan. Just in case ๐

It’s the withers that’s giving everyone shivers. They should use the technology for bank vaults.

Great story – the ending made me laugh. I liked the way you hyped up the Magicke, especially the withering!

It’s not real Magick unless there is withering involved ๐
