A Rocky Start
It’s time once again for my contribution to Friday Fictioneers, the weekly flash fiction challenge hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was supplied by Dee Lovering.
Apparently my story last week was “a bit dark”, so this one is a bit lighter :-). So here is my idyllic honeymoon story, ably aided by the inestimable Freddy Mercury.

“We’re here!” smiled Rex, bursting into song. “Baarrrcelo-onaaa, it was the first time that we met…”
“Quiet! People are staring!” His new wife looked embarrassed.
“Barcelo-onaaa, how can… ow! Ow!” Rex struggled to fend off Cassie’s handbag.
“Finished? Where’s this honeymoon cottage you booked, then?”
“Lisbon.”
“What? Why are we in Spain?”
“No idea,” smiled Rex. “I wondered at the time why you were booking tickets to Spain.”
“WE’RE IN THE WRONG COUNTRY!”
“Yes! Ah, Barcelona, home to… ow! Ow!”
An old couple watched them from a nearby café.
“Ouch, nasty,” commented the woman.
The man nodded sympathetically. “Must be married, love. I recognise the signs… ow! Ow!”

Lol! It was supposed to be Mexico but he took us to the airport that was about 3 hours away from our middle of nowhere resort and rented the most rickety old car to get us there.

Thanks for the smiles! Love does this sort of thing to people…and they don’t seem to mind. Now if they had been married for 20 years and this happened, OUCH (for real)! 😉

I think I like Rex. So unfazed by the fact that he booked a holiday cottage in Lisbon and she booked flights to Spain. Who booked which first? If he booked the cottage first, then it’s obviously her fault. They could just rent a car, have a nice time in Barcelona, and then drive to Lisbon – it’s only about eleven hours. Think of all the sightseeing they could do on the way. Love the old couple watching them. I can just see them walking back home after their coffee, holding hands 🙂

I thought that too. I really wanted to make more of the fact that Rex was so unfazed by these little hiccups, but sadly didn’t have nearly enough words. He’s definitely seeing this as an opportunity rather than the disaster his new wife thinks it is. I reckon they’ll be good for each other – each balancing the other.

Let’s see …. Their honeymoon is shot, their marriage is already marked by spousal battery and public buffoonery …. In short, you have all the ingredients necessary for either murder most foul or rom-com insanity! So glad you chose the latter, Mr. D., and kept the black humor at bay. For now.
