MFTS – The Highest Spirits

Here’s my story for Barbara Beacham’s Mondays Finish the Story.

“The only residents remaining in the small town of Miners Hill are spirits.”

“That was the end of the myth? Heavy,” said Chad.

“Yep,” said Brad. “And there it is. Miners Hill.”

“Wow. It really is black and white. I thought it was just an old photo.”

They scrambled down the hill.

“Spirits, the myth says? What kind, d’ya think?”

“I’m hopin’ vodka, whisky, maybe even… the Good Stuff.”

“Wow. Advocaat? Heavy.”

Suddenly a host of ghostly apparitions appeared.

“Whoa!” Chad pulled the joint out of his mouth and stared at it suspiciously.

“I can see them too, and I’m not even high!” said Brad.

“Oh, dude, you gave up?” asked Chad sympathetically.

“Yeah, it’s kinda tough…”

“IF YOU TWO DON’T MIND?” broke in one of the spirits. “YOUR SOULS ARE FORFEIT.”

“No! Not my Nikes!” Chad looked in dismay at his footwear.

And so the lads joined the ranks of the dead, booze in hand, weed in mouth, the highest spirits of Miners Hill.

LOL! “No! Not my Nikes!” Haha! Cute story. So those dudes are the highest spirits in the spirit realm??

    • May 25, 2015 at 7:43 pm

For sure, given that somehow they’re still managing to smoke the weed 🙂

The lads should have paid more attention in English class. Spelling and punctuation DO count. So does knowing that there’s more than one meaning to a word. And homonyms — a particularly English kind of confusion. Love it.

    • May 26, 2015 at 12:53 pm

They certainly should have thought a bit more about that word, though their mindset predisposed them towards booze!

  3. May 25, 2015 at 8:16 pm

Funny made me think of Cheech and Chong American stoners from the 70’s.

    • May 26, 2015 at 12:53 pm

I thought that too as I was writing 🙂

  4. May 25, 2015 at 9:17 pm

Surely Nikes are sacrosanct! Funny scene, played out well through the dialogue. 🙂

  5. May 25, 2015 at 10:03 pm

Very funny! Love the Nikes reference! The tale of Miners Hill goes up in smoke….Well done Ali! Thanks for sharing your story! See you next week! Be well… ^..^

  6. May 26, 2015 at 12:06 am

Very funny, high spirits they were certainly now….

    • May 26, 2015 at 12:55 pm

It sounds like their ideal lifestyle. Glad you liked it!

  7. May 26, 2015 at 12:41 am

I laughed through this. Nice job.

Funny, but I thought “are they experiencing a combined, drug induced hallucination?”
Apparently is it possible. Your stories are always so thought proving which is what makes a good story. 😀

    • May 26, 2015 at 12:56 pm

That’s entirely possible, given what they’re drinking/smoking at any given moment!

All Hail to the Most High Spirits, Chad and Brad.
    They’re dead and ba-a-ad!

  10. May 26, 2015 at 2:31 am

It would be interesting to visit a town full of stoned ghosts… especially in living black and white!

    • May 26, 2015 at 12:57 pm

It would probably take the edge off the terror a bit, seeing them weaving around and slurring. Chad and Brad are a bad influence!

  11. May 26, 2015 at 3:08 am

There are so many great lines in this story. By the end, I was laughing out loud!

    • May 26, 2015 at 12:59 pm

I’m glad you liked it! It was fun writing stoner dialogue 🙂 Another hundred words would have been nice…

      • May 26, 2015 at 3:17 pm

There could be a part 2?

        • May 26, 2015 at 3:20 pm

You never know! I think an extended version of this one might be the thing. I had to cut out an awful lot of words.

  12. May 26, 2015 at 7:14 am

When I read your story’s you bring up the need/desire to read a book.
    Very well done young man.

Isn’t the large building at the top of photo from a past story?

    • May 26, 2015 at 1:02 pm

Thanks! I’m glad my stories make you want to read. Actually, if I could think of a whole plot, I reckon Chad and Brad would make good characters for an actual novelette.

I’ve certainly seen a similar photo for some story at some point in the past.

      • May 28, 2015 at 1:48 am

If you don’t vaporize, run them off a cliff, bury them, chop them up, you’ve already written the story’s for Cad and Brad.

        • May 28, 2015 at 8:14 am

There could be all manner of excitement in store for those two.

  13. May 26, 2015 at 2:12 pm

Cute. these guys got more of a high than the thought possible.
P.S. Stay away from that town. !!!!! Wouldn’t want you to get lost.

I am going to guess losing Chad and Brad to Miners’ Hill is no great loss to the rest of the world. In fact, the spirits may regret that later on.

I had to look up Advocaat…which led to Google asking if I wanted egg nog. Yech!

    • May 27, 2015 at 9:38 am

I reckon they’ll “liven” the place up!
I tried to think of some tipple that most people hate and which wouldn’t really sound like Chad and Brad’s “thing” 🙂

  15. May 26, 2015 at 4:35 pm

    Haha…loved it…very entertaining.

  16. May 26, 2015 at 5:23 pm

You have to love Chd’s priorities… the Nike’s must be protected. So funny and so good!!!1

    • May 27, 2015 at 9:38 am

They’re expensive and cool! First things first.

  17. May 26, 2015 at 6:22 pm

Funny ghost story…The title is very funny too 🙂

    • May 27, 2015 at 9:38 am

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it 🙂

  18. May 26, 2015 at 8:46 pm

A very funny story! I love the Nikes line. 😀

  19. May 26, 2015 at 10:31 pm

I bet this would work brilliantly as a sketch. So many great one-liners 😀

  20. May 27, 2015 at 1:23 am

Try to explain those new spirits to the Medium…

    • May 27, 2015 at 9:40 am

The Medium will certainly have a hard time getting any sense out of them!

Hahaha.. its so funny!! Souls with a ‘U’. LOL

  23. May 27, 2015 at 10:42 am

It made me smile too, great humour.

  24. May 27, 2015 at 1:03 pm

Cool story! It reminded me of the movie “up in the smoke” 🙂

    • May 27, 2015 at 1:10 pm

I haven’t actually ever seen any of their films but I’m aware of them, and my guys brought Cheech and Chong to my mind as well!

  25. May 27, 2015 at 8:22 pm

Funny story, Ali, They sound a little like Bill and Ted, who I dearly love. You might want to change the word “The” in line five to “They.” That doesn’t take away from the fact it’s a great story. 😀 — Suzanne

    • May 28, 2015 at 8:04 am

They are a bit Bill and Ted, aren’t they?
It’s unbelievable – the number of times I proof-read that and there was still a typo (now corrected). Thanks 🙂

  26. May 29, 2015 at 6:42 am

Absolutely brilliant repartee, a mind boggling variation of highs, lows and spiritual soles. ~ Well produced Ali ~ 🙂

  27. May 31, 2015 at 1:54 pm

    MOL…Ya man… high in the sky… 😀 Hilarical Pawkisses 🙂 ❤

  28. June 1, 2015 at 12:36 am

Corn-ball humor is only humor when you are intoxicated. Nice job.

    • June 1, 2015 at 6:59 am

Thanks. Mostly everything’s funny when you’re intoxicated!

  29. June 9, 2015 at 5:47 am

Hilariously amusing dialogue right there… I wish we can have as much fun without being high on drugs… or can we?

    • June 9, 2015 at 6:54 am

I’m sure we can. I had fun writing it and I’m not on anything 🙂
