Sharing My World 2015 Week 38

It’s time for another Share Your World, hosted by Cee!

share-your-world2

What do you do to make a living or during the day if you are retired.  If you are a student what are you studying?
I work in IT for a small internet-based company. I write code, review other people’s code, help other people write code, test code, put code live, look after servers, look after databases, provide support…

Have you ever participated in a distance walking, swimming, running, or biking event? Tell your story.
No. Doing so would place unnecessary strain on our National Health Service :-).

What is usually your first thought when you wake up?
Weekend/Public Holiday/Annual Leave: “Yay! Let’s get this day started! Oh, the possibilities!”

Work day: “Ugh. Morning already? Ugh. How can it be morning already? I only just went to bed. Ugh.”

Complete this sentence: Look out behind you, it’s a…
…monkey.

How great would that be? Monkeys are cool. They even have a cute name. Monkey. Hee hee :-).

This was hilarious, Ali. I take it you just want an monkey behind you, not behind you on your back. 😀

Ha, no, I don’t want a monkey on my back! Just sitting coolly behind me would be good 🙂

How did I miss this? Heavens! It just slipped right past me. I didn’t write code. I wrote about code. I had people write sample code to illustrate how various system worked, usually AI software designed to help developers develop. Also, I worked on DB-1 during its development and was forever after hooked on databases. I started with DB-1 which was bought by IBM and became DB-2 and I eventually made my way into pure object linked DBs, though it turns out that a combination of relational and object linking works better than either does alone. I love knowing what’s going on behind the UI and I’m amazed at how bar it’s all come since its beginnings in the early 1980s. Cool beans.

The phrase “you need to write some documentation” makes me feel ill 🙂 It’s cool that you were “in on the ground floor” during modern database development, though.

I’m always horrified when they make engineers and developers write documentation. That’s what writers are for. Pity they’ve “gone in another direction,” as in “no” documentation.

Monkeys are definitely cool, but they rarely walk around unattended in our part of the country. Perhaps they do in Cornwall. 🙂
