FF – Tastes Like Chicken

Here is my contribution to Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by J. Hardy Carroll.

“It’s so beautiful in here, safe within the Dome.”

“It’s beautiful outside too, Dad!”

“Beautiful, but DEADLY. We got in here just in time. The atmosphere… TOXIC! The plant life… CARNIVOROUS!”

“But I can see people out there, Dad!”

Monsters, sweetie. Cannibals! They’ll rip the FLESH from your BONES!”

“Don’t scare the child, dear.”

“I’m only joshing! Look, I’ll pop outside. See? Perfectly… aaaaargghhh!”

“Hmm, looks like he was right after all. Back inside, kids. Looks like ‘Future EcoWorld Biodome’ is home now. Good job we dragged your Dad’s body back inside. Anyone for lunch? Tastes like chicken.”

It’s that macho attitude, always leads to an horrific death 🙂

I like a practical matriarch. Perhaps not that practical… but…

    • January 16, 2020 at 12:42 pm

She did take things to extremes, but hey, it’s not like she killed him herself…

Mother will always try to make the unavoidable seem palatable to the other members of the family. BTW from what I read, it’s more like pork… 😉

    • January 16, 2020 at 12:44 pm

      From what you “read”… 😉
Yes, mum will always try to protect the (still-living) family members.

    Dear Ali,

Guess who’s for dinner tonight. Your dad. Oh dear. Disturbing dystopian black humor.

    • January 16, 2020 at 3:40 pm

      Dear Rochelle,
Yes, it all went a bit wrong for dad. But on the bright side, the rest of the family is okay (for now)!

The kids don’t seem too phased by the thought 🙂 I’m glad you liked it!

I imagine they’ll be perfectly safe and sound from all the monsters and the toxins. At least until the first time it hails….

    • January 16, 2020 at 3:46 pm

All it’ll take is one little hole and it’s dinner time!

  15. January 16, 2020 at 7:10 pm

what a dad. he took the risk to show he was right 🙂

  16. January 16, 2020 at 10:39 pm

Now, there’s a good dad. Even in death, he never stops giving.

  17. January 17, 2020 at 2:19 am

Good grief. In the previous story, they ate Granny and the narrator was next up on the menu. Now they’ve put dear old dad on the barbecue! What next?

  18. January 17, 2020 at 5:07 am

    Does anyone have any salt?

  19. January 17, 2020 at 8:26 am

    • January 18, 2020 at 11:04 am

The apocalypse doesn’t have to be dark and frightening!

  20. January 17, 2020 at 10:46 am

At last, a welcome bit of light relief! A tasty tale indeed.

I’ve read that about the pork, too. 😉 I’m a bad person, I howled. From laughter. This was great.

I’m glad you enjoyed it! The apocalypse doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom 🙂

Oh dear ! Poor old Dad – he just wasn’t thinking it through was he ?
I thought people tasted like pork ?

    • January 19, 2020 at 5:03 pm

He was pretty convinced it was safe… I guess they’ll find out soon enough what it tastes like 🙂

  24. January 19, 2020 at 8:36 pm

Recycling has a purpose… I guess the biodome is all vegan except when there are som fresh corpses to indulge in.

    • January 22, 2020 at 3:07 pm

Yes, this was a rare “treat”!

  25. January 20, 2020 at 2:06 pm
