FF – And Thus, The Earth Burned

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Dale Rogerson.

The Visitors had arrived almost a year ago. They had brought much – advanced medical care, transport technology and more.

In return, the Earth offered sand, a rare commodity on the Visitors’ home planet.

Hank and Jed were there when the war started. Some might say they started it.

The concert was in full swing when beams of light struck down. In an instant, every musician was blown into a red mist.

It was actually quite pretty.

“Darn it, Jed! Them ‘ayliuns’ don’t like Country ‘n Western!”

“They don’t, Hank!”

“Heathens! Kill ‘em! Kill ‘em all!”

And thus, the Earth burned.

Without sand, we’d have no cement. Or glass. The war was inevitable

Somebody always finds something to fight over. But then, what kind of mess would we be in if “they” took over? Country music fans are such firebrands. 😉

Once they get going, there’s no stopping them 🙂

Were Jed and Hank (perfect names for this story) wearing red hats?

    • January 14, 2021 at 8:33 am

They had on the full cowboy gear.

With ten gallon hats, and stirrups, as I recently read in a Yankee blogpost ??! 🙄

        • January 16, 2021 at 5:59 am

All sounds legit cowboy gear to me 🙂

This is really different. Still bloody, but a different twist. Well done.

    • January 14, 2021 at 8:37 am

Thanks 🙂 What else could those shafts of light be but deadly beams of death?

Maybe they’re the original “Beam me up, Scottie” lights 🙂

‘It was actually quite pretty’ – brilliant!

    • January 16, 2021 at 5:29 am

I had a “Pratchett” moment there!

I’m not wild about C&W myself, but that’s taking it a bit far.

    • January 16, 2021 at 5:32 am

These guys don’t muck around. Don’t like it? Whoomp.

  8. January 14, 2021 at 10:45 am

Please keep these ayliuns away from the Dusty Vinyl Archive….

    • January 16, 2021 at 5:35 am

Don’t worry, as long as DJ Scratchy doesn’t actually play any of it, I’m sure it’s safe…

Is this a PC version of everyone blaming China and China blaming the US etc etc… Loved the humour 😀

    • January 16, 2021 at 5:36 am

It could be, if that would make me seem awfully subtle and clever 🙂

Country & Western is certainly the ‘marmite’ of the music world. I could see it starting an intergalactic war.

    • January 16, 2021 at 5:37 am

Ha, it is. People do seem to have strong feelings about it one way or the other.

    Dear Ali,

C&W isn’t my favorite either but couldn’t they just get up and walk out?

    • January 16, 2021 at 5:38 am

      Dear Rochelle,
They didn’t want to risk it getting up and following them out, perhaps. They’re new here!

  12. January 14, 2021 at 4:22 pm

For the sake of the earth, ban Country and Western now – apart from Dolly Parton, I’d miss her big … voice!

  13. January 14, 2021 at 7:25 pm

Ya never know what will set ’em up, eh?

  14. January 14, 2021 at 9:13 pm

    Killer music.

  15. January 14, 2021 at 9:37 pm

a bleak future indeed if we don’t learn to get along.

    • January 16, 2021 at 5:54 am

We just have to be more careful with our music choices, I guess.

Well, I guess they got their sand. So much for County ‘n Western! =)

    • January 16, 2021 at 5:56 am

Our sand, our music, what more do they want from us? 🙂

  17. January 15, 2021 at 10:13 am

They offered us everything – medical care, technology, end to country music- and we blew it.

    • January 16, 2021 at 6:01 am

Yes, I don’t see any negatives so far!

  18. January 16, 2021 at 4:37 am

Country and Western might drive me to such measures if I were an alien.

  19. January 16, 2021 at 12:41 pm

A war over country music. It was inevitable. Good story, Ali. 😀 — Suzanne

    • January 17, 2021 at 6:54 am

It had to happen eventually 🙂

Good story Ali – I like the way it hints at all sorts of things – a trade war over sand, Aliens who bring superior medical knowledge AND hate Country & Western music, and ends with some sort of extinction. Alot there.

    • January 17, 2021 at 6:57 am

It was all happening this week 🙂

  22. January 16, 2021 at 6:27 pm

I love the “it was actually quite pretty”! Why they hate on country and western, though….

    • January 17, 2021 at 6:58 am

There’s no accounting for taste with some alyiuns…

  23. January 18, 2021 at 8:43 pm

All to do with a different taste in music… but then again, all wars start with a difference of opinion. At least the musicians being blown into a red mist offered a pretty spectacle! 🙂

    • January 19, 2021 at 6:36 am

Yes, their final performance ended with quite a display 🙂
