FF – Lesson Learned?

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Na’ama Yehuda.

“Look there, Son, the remnants of New York, its skyscrapers gone, destroyed by GMMMGs.”

“Genetically-Modified Massively-Mutated Giraffes. See them on the horizon, towering over the destruction.”

“What happened?”

“Bred for food, but everyone loves giraffes. No bugger would eat them. They escaped and ran amok.”

Ooooh Gaaaaawd, we didn’t know. WE DIDN’T KNOW!

“As Mr Melodrama says, it was a huge mistake. Now we live at sea, starving. But never fear, once the genetically-modified massively-mutated dolphin programme reaches fruition, food for everyone!”

Huh. I love dolphins. I’m not eating dolphins.
Me neither. Not gonna eat Flipper.

Lesson NOT learned!

    Humans never learn! 😀

  2. May 19, 2021 at 4:51 pm

Yep. Mankind never learns. Or as one wit put it, “The cause of problems is solutions.”
(Speaking of which, I hear that mankind is back building reactors, as nuclear power as the energy of the future. Clean energy & all that.)
Great take on the prompt — who but you woulda thought of giraffes? 🙂

We should never muck about with nature.

    • May 20, 2021 at 10:54 am

No, or one day nature will muck about with us.

  4. May 19, 2021 at 5:04 pm

Seeing the cranes as giraffes was wonderful

  5. May 19, 2021 at 6:38 pm

    Lol! 😀 love it!

  6. May 19, 2021 at 7:53 pm

I knew giraffes would be our downfall. Survival of the tallest. Planet of the apes? Pshhh!

    • May 20, 2021 at 12:27 pm

Apes would be trampled under-hoof, giraffes is where it’s at!

I smiled and smiled at this story…

  8. May 19, 2021 at 8:53 pm

    Dear Ali,

Raising giraffes for food? I don’t think I could bring myself to eat one.

    • May 20, 2021 at 12:32 pm

      Dear Rochelle,
Me neither. Bad choice of food animal there.

  9. May 19, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Now that Neil pointed out the cranes that’s all I see. Of course that’s what happened. Can I see the story as fun and tragic at the same time? Of course I can 🙂

Invaders from Mars, eat your hearts out. Come near us again, and we’ll set our giraffes on you. 👽🦒🦒🦒

  11. May 20, 2021 at 7:52 am

Oh sure…. those Northerners won’t eat giraffe. But in the South, they’re not starving…. if it has four legs, it’s good eatin’!

    • May 20, 2021 at 12:42 pm

      Watch out, genetically-modified massively-mutated poodles…

  12. May 20, 2021 at 8:22 am

OMC I think I know who did this…MOL🙊🙈Pawkisses for a Happy Day, Draliman🐾😽💞

  13. May 20, 2021 at 9:02 am

Giraffes… who knew! They’re herbivores thankfully.

  14. May 20, 2021 at 10:29 am

That’s hilarious. lesson learned: never mess with genes! Love it!

  15. May 20, 2021 at 1:21 pm

Wait until they get to the Genetically-Modified Massively-Mutated bugs. That’ll be a feast! And I don’t see no cranes either. 😀

  16. May 20, 2021 at 2:45 pm

The dolphins might eat them and go on to rule the world, you never know. Genetically-Modify Massively-Carefully!

    My contribution!

    • May 21, 2021 at 8:10 am

The dolphins are definitely just waiting for their opportunity, this will give it to them.

it’s nature’s way, survival of the fittest. 🙂

  18. May 21, 2021 at 4:27 pm

I saw giraffes too! That was a fun take on the prompt – but with a serious message too. Great piece.

    • May 22, 2021 at 4:22 am

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it! Definitely giraffes 🙂

  19. May 21, 2021 at 9:04 pm

What an imaginative take on the prompt! And what an optimistic view of humanity’s preparedness to eat animals.

    • May 22, 2021 at 4:27 am

I imagine that we’d happily eat each other if push came to shove…

  20. May 22, 2021 at 6:30 am

Ah geez… I dunno that I could. Well, if I were hungry enough… Damnation!

  21. May 23, 2021 at 1:26 pm

There was so much at steak on this project. The cranes are a nice touch.

    • May 23, 2021 at 3:37 pm

I’m pretty sure they’re definitely giraffes for sure 🙂

  22. May 23, 2021 at 1:54 pm

Humans never learn from their mistakes. Great take on the prompt! Loved your take.

    • May 23, 2021 at 3:38 pm

No, we don’t. I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂

  23. May 23, 2021 at 2:31 pm

I love the idea of GMMMG’s, another human fix/ gesture towards saving the planet, which doesn’t work. The giraffe and dolphin dialogue is priceless.

    • May 23, 2021 at 3:39 pm

We try sometimes, but in a rather short-sighted way.

  24. May 24, 2021 at 2:56 pm

LOL. People never learn! Fun story.

  25. May 25, 2021 at 10:54 pm

Very clever take on the prompt.
