FF – Dedication to Duty

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Russell Gayer.

I couldn’t really think of a story but I didn’t want to miss a week.

“Send in the report, Haversham.”

“But there’s nothing to report, Sarge. Can’t we go home?”

“We were told to conduct surveillance on this area, Haversham. That’s what we’ll do.”

“It seems like we’ve been here forever. I’m sure there used to be more cars and people and less forest outside when we started.”

“Ours not to reason why.”

“I never used to be this old. And look at Ken. He’s all skin and bone. Well, mostly bone. I think they’ve forgotten we’re here.”

“We do our duty, Haversham. We’ve got movement. ‘Squirrel in tree 90 metres north of location.’ Note it down, man, note it down!”

Sounded a bit like Captain Mannering (Mainwaring)… whatever. I could just visualise that.

Poor Haversham. You have to feel for him 😕 That last sentence … Perfect reaction for the situation, I’ll warrant 😁

They couldn’t possibly leave their van to fetch doughnuts, they might be spotted 🙂

That reminds me…. I used to be a volunteer Traffic Enforcement person with the local fire/police through out most of my teens and 20’s. One time, I was stuck out on a remote posting to redirect semis’ around an accident and the side roads could not be navigated the curves on that road and they were often too unintelligent and tried. So, to avoid secondary accidents, I was posted. I did not have a radio for communications, as they had run out. Didn’t bother me none. I still took the posting. Anyway, hours and hours passed. The Chief forgot he’d posted me out so far (usually, I was right at the edge of the scene, within shouting distance). I was out there for two and a half days before someone finally realized I was missing (it wasn’t even my mom). Chief felt really bad about it. The ending… he bought me my own radio. mom was jealous.

And to think, the pot farm they were sent to keep an eye on was right under their nose all the time. Actually, pretty soon it will be growing into the van as well…

    Funny but believable 🙂
There is the real life story of Hiroo Onoda. A Japanese soldier who remained in the jungle on Lubang Island near Luzon, in the Philippines, until 1974 because he did not believe that the war had ended.
