FF – Seasons
Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Penny Gadd.
Spring, and the river runs clear, Nature’s canvas. The world begins.
Summer, and the river teems with life. The world flourishes.
Autumn, and the river fears. Its creatures die, choking on Man’s effluence. The world teeters.
Winter, and the river mourns. Putrid sickness flows sluggishly to empty seas. The world dies.
Spring, and the river flows clear. New life appears. The world, reborn. A second chance.

Beautiful poem, Alistair! I wonder how many more chances Nature will have given the current rate of destruction.

This counts as a poem? Oh boy, sorry about that 😉
I don’t think we’ll get a second chance 😦

There used to be an unwavering belief in the seasons. Not so much anymore. I looked up the location of your bonus photo — which looks like a lovely place to take a walk — and see it is the site of a holy well. Gives the last line in your story that much more impact.

It was quite a pleasant place to visit! I’d never even heard of it until last week and it’s only 10 miles away.
The seasons aren’t what they used to be. “When I was a kid…”

Lisa,
Beautifully written. Nature has its own tale to tell of life and death.

My fault. Too much poetical lyrics, too little Ali’s trademark mayhem 🙂

Second chance sounds always good, although, in real life, we don’t get it often.

We don’t. And I fear not this time either.

Thank goodness all of the wealthy industrial barons were able to ride things out in their bunkers so someone can start the cycle all over again!

Dear Ali,
I had to look twice to make sure I was in the right place. 😉 Lovely verse about the cycle of life and nature. Well done. I like the guest photo as well.

Dear Rochelle,
I’m sure “normal service” will be resumed next week 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed my little foray into whatever that is defined as!
It was quite a coincidence that I’d taken some relevant photos just that morning!

What have you done with Alistair?
All jokes aside, this is so well done and, as we know, second chances are a gift rarely given.

Nature gives second chances galore, but I think we are wearing the line thin.

In some ways, we’ve already had our second chance with our rivers. Many of them have been cleaned up sufficiently to support fish once more. I hope we don’t regress as we struggle with climate change.
