It is said that some trees provide access to other worlds, even allowing entry to the faerie realm itself, a place of magic and wonder.

Thus, one dark and windy night two adventurers, with all due reverence, approached such a tree, fearful yet excited. What miracles awaited? What riches of body and soul?

The first reached out, tentatively, his companion nodding encouragement. Eyes wide, scarcely breathing, he touched the tree, almost a caress, reciting the ancient spell.

Then gave it a shove. Then a bit of a kicking.

“Arse. It’s just a tree.”

“Bollocks.”

“Pub?”

“Yeah.”

And as they walked away the tree crept up and dropped a branch on them! Jest not with the faerie tree! 🙂

Just because it’s not granting them access, doesn’t mean it’s not the real deal 🙂

Good choice of action. What a lovely tree though. It really should have worked!

Haha! Did they read the spell off a toilet wall in the pub they were in earlier? Looks like they were already drunk before approaching the tree.

I think they might have! The tree’s probably in the pub car park.

The answer to all unsolved problems is always the pub. Or the bar. The total solution.

    Didn’t spend too long attempting to secure entrance to the other world then? It was ever thus. ;

Some people might think they had already spent too much time at the pub before they tried to use a tree as a portal…

In their minds it’s a solemn moment. To a casual observer it may have seemed otherwise as they staggered out for a smoke and saw the tree…

Made me laugh. And it made me imagine the tree taking vengeance of some kind–like prompting a bird in its branches to relieve itself on their heads 🙂

Yes! Quite why they assumed that just because it wouldn’t let them in it wasn’t a genuine faerie tree, I don’t know 🙂

    Dear Ali,

My guess is that they found more ‘magic’ at the pub. 😉 Or maybe the tree held out on them because it didn’t like being kicked.

Oh, my, those two could have found themselves in deep trouble with the faeries. (No on dares to mess with the elf abodes on Iceland for fear of reprisal.) Perhaps their beer will turn into something quite nasty… Love the way you completely changed the mood of your story in those last few lines! 🙂

Thanks, I went to a lot of trouble trying to squeeze an air of mystery into the first 80 words or so.
If they drink enough of the beer, they won’t care if it’s nasty or not 🙂
