Sharing My World 25-07-2022
Here is my post for Melanie’s Share Your World.
What mythical creature would improve the world most if it existed?
Any mythical creature worth its salt will take one look and run/fly/dimension jump the other way.
A cute sexy little tree nymph living in my garden would improve my world.
Should the death penalty be re-instated? Why or why not?
I’d say no. I found an interactive map which indicates that the death penalty is still used in mainly Muslim countries plus USA.
I’m against it for two reasons – first, there’s always the possibility that the wrong person has been convicted. You can let someone out of prison with an apology, but it’s very difficult to un-hang someone. Second, if someone has committed a really heinous crime I’d rather they languish in a tiny prison cell being slowly eaten by rats than get a quick head-chopping.
Spontaneity Or Stability?
Stability, all the way.
Can a dog/cat suffer? What about an ant? What about a plant? What about a bacteria cell? Why do some humans think we’re the only species that does suffer? Your thoughts?
Suffering/feeling pain happens when a brain processes nerve impulses in a certain way. So anything that has some sort of “awareness” can suffer, I guess. Not sure about plants, though – you’d never cut the grass again! And a bacterium cell – nah.

There is something very attractive about the idea of oubliettes. I have a list of candidates!

Yeah, an oubliette, that’ll learn ’em!

Given how long it takes between conviction and execution, most prisoners on death row end up being nibbled away by rats anyway….

I did think that! Seems a waste of food and board if you’re gonna execute them anyway…

Thanks Alistair for Sharing Your World. Great answers to all the questions. Your take on the death penalty one was top drawer! Apparently it costs over 3 million dollars to actually put someone to death, while it merely 🤔🤨😲 costs only one million and roughly a half to keep them in prison and feed them and so forth. You made some good points, but I’ll ask you this: Are there some crimes so heinous that the person is beyond redemption? And why does it cost so bloody much to erase those. Now if the person is actually innocent (valid point on your side) then why aren’t lawyers doing a much better job at proving that? It’s like a tar baby. You kick the thing and get stuck and the worse you fight, the worse it gets. Sorry for the crab on your comment! Have a great week!

Sadly not everyone can afford a decent lawyer. Plus some people get proved innocent years later when technology improves (eg DNA). But anyway, that sounds pretty pricey. I wonder which bit costs so much? All the appeals, maybe.

Very true about the mythical creatures! I talk to my houseplants all the time. Mowing the grass is the same as humans getting a haircut. 😉

I like that, a haircut 🙂

I tend to agree with you on the simple fact that many people convicted of absolutely heinous crimes eventually turn out to be not guilty — at least of that crime. You can’t undead someone, so however much simpler it is to put a bullet in the back of someone’s head, I think keeping them alive is just as meaningful as killing them from a punitive point of view. It also works out better when you have to say “oops”!

Science says that you need a brain and central nervous system t feel pain. But it also says that the smell of cut grass is a cry for help. So, in a nut shell, supposedly plants can not feel pain but they do respond to stimuli.

I hadn’t heard that about the grass 😮

It’s very difficult to un-hang someone? You mean it IS possible? (Releasing someone mid-hang doesn’t count.) 😉

Yes, but you need a dark and forbidding castle, a lightning rod and a servant named “Igor”.

No, for sure.

If “no” to the death penalty, I agree.
