FF – One to Doomsday

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Brenda Cox.

It happened overnight.

There was no wind. No storm. No vandalism.

Two of the three trees simply fell down. Ripped out by the roots.

Once upon a time (as all good fairy tales begin) they called these ‘The Peace Trees’.

‘As long as the three stand, the future is assured,’ so the story goes. Or words to that effect.

Two down, one to go.

One minute to doomsday?

But the old stories are gone and no-one even suspects. Except maybe old Granny Wilkins. She has “the sight”, they say.

But no-one ever believes her.

Until it’s too late.

This would make for a great fairy tale, I think. Well done.

  2. June 23, 2021 at 4:58 pm

Maybe if nobody believes her, it won’t happen

  3. June 23, 2021 at 5:31 pm

I’m a believer that the world won’t end with a bang but with a whimper (I know that’s a quote from somewhere, but it applies in this case.) Good story. Why doesn’t anyone ever listen to Granny?

  4. June 23, 2021 at 5:42 pm

Oh my, that’s very ominous indeed. Great take!

  5. June 23, 2021 at 8:29 pm

Looks like Granny will be the only one left to inherit the world. 🙂

A very intriguing magical story. The circumstances of the trees should be a testimony of Granny Wilkins prophecy. I want to know more!

You’ll have to visit Granny, she’ll tell you over tea and home-baked cake 🙂

    • June 25, 2021 at 7:39 am

      Grannies do know effurrything 🙂

  9. June 24, 2021 at 12:49 pm

    Dear Ali,

They might learn to listen to Granny, but it will be too late.

    • June 25, 2021 at 7:42 am

      Dear Rochelle,
      I fear you are correct.

  10. June 24, 2021 at 1:58 pm

No one ever listens to wise Grannies, neither in magical worlds nor in our reality. And the doomsday clock is ticking.

  11. June 24, 2021 at 4:07 pm

it’s nature’s way. everything has an expiration date.

  12. June 24, 2021 at 4:21 pm

I’m surprised they hadn’t already cut them all down to make more Puppies on a Roll…

    • June 25, 2021 at 7:47 am

Puppies on a Roll is the best use for trees…

  13. June 24, 2021 at 7:49 pm

One to go. That close, huh? Not good.

  14. June 24, 2021 at 8:29 pm

What a great portrayal of our cynical society.

  15. June 25, 2021 at 9:05 am

At least Granny Wilkins knows, just like the trees, her days are numbered. Not long now, or has she an escape plan up her sleeve?

  16. June 25, 2021 at 10:00 am

Looks like they’re going to finally listen to Granny Wilkins, alas, I fear too late

    • June 26, 2021 at 4:18 am

Their cry of “help us, Granny Wilkins!” will indeed come too late.

She sounds like a wise old bird. Hopefully, Granny Smith’s apple trees won’t fall down too! Nice one Ali.

    Here’s mine!

    • June 26, 2021 at 4:22 am

I hope not. Not only is the end of the world coming, but we’re running out of Granny Smiths as well!

The Doomsday clock may be ticking, but what is it telling us? And how do we turn it back? Your story conveys a good sense of the helplessness we feel confronted by the problems we have to solve

    • June 26, 2021 at 4:23 am

Maybe it’s too late to turn it back 😦 I’m glad you liked it!

I’m reminded of the biblical statement that prophets are often without honor in their own countries. We don’t want to believe the kid we grew up with, or the old lady who always had cooies to share. We need someone exotic, different. Human nature, I guess.

    • June 26, 2021 at 4:30 am

I guess that explains some people’s fascination with “influencers” and the like.

Granny is probably smarter than them all. Listen to her!

    • June 27, 2021 at 4:45 am

Granny is always smarter than them all, the world over 🙂

  21. June 27, 2021 at 9:20 am

    An interesting take. Well done.

As has been said, your story reads as an absorbing fairy tale of our times. Nicely done Ali.

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it 🙂
