CWG Week 5 Episode 5

January 26, 2014 18 comments

It’s week 5 of Kerrie’s Chain Writing Game! This week sounded like a budding romance, but it didn’t take long for everything to go horribly wrong.

Catch up with the story by clicking on the little blue froggy. My contribution is below.

He’s Behind You – episode 5

“What the hell is that?” screamed Kelly.

“I don’t know, it’s… it’s… I don’t know!” replied Ben, frantically pushing the button on the lift controls. “Come on, come on!”

“Push the button! Push the button!” screamed Kelly.

“I am pushing the button!” yelled Ben.

The creature came closer. It was dark in the lobby – only the emergency lights were glowing, but Ben was certain this creature was not human.

Finally Ben’s efforts came to fruition and the doors slid closed. The lift began to rise.

Somewhere below Ben heard a rending sound as the lift doors in the lobby were ripped open.

A New Patio

It’s Friday Fictioneers time, hosted as always by the lovely Rochelle. A hundred plus eager writers get together to offer their own interpretation on a photo in around 100 words, and this week the photo has been supplied by fellow Friday Fictioneererererer Björn Rudberg!

Other entries can be found by clicking here.

So, without further ado, here is my contribution to this week’s fun.

Zeke’s sigh was lost in the rumble of the cement mixer. What a waste of time this was! They were out in the middle of nowhere. Anywhere would do, but his wife was a traditionalist. It has to be done the right way, she insisted. You always hide them under the patio, she argued.

He threw another dismembered corpse into the concrete and sighed again. They were perfectly alright where they were before, feeding the grape vines.

A flash of light caught his eye – sunlight glinting off binoculars far below in the valley.

Ah, lunch!

He reached for his hunting rifle.

CWG Week 4 – Behind Bars

January 21, 2014 10 comments

This week for Kerrie’s Chain Writing Game we’ve been invited to write a companion piece to one of the stories we’ve written during weeks 1 to 3. Having already written “Jorge’s Story” from “Have You Seen Helen“, I’ve decided to write interviews from prison with two of the characters from “A Bloody Monday Morning“.

I’ve been really strapped for time this week so I’ve hammered this in quite quickly (being close to the deadline and all). I hope I haven’t accidentally introduced any continuity errors 😦

Other companion stories can be found here.

This is just a quick bit of fun (I didn’t want to miss out on a Chain Writing week). And so, without further ado, and with very little editing, I present to you “Jed and Charley – Behind Bars”!

The Constant River

January 15, 2014 68 comments

It’s that time of the week again – Friday Fictioneers time!

Every week a bunch of us write 100 words (or thereabouts)  in response to a photo prompt, which this week has been supplied by Erin Leary. The talented Rochelle is our host – why don’t you give it a go?

This week’s other entries can be found by clicking here.

This is something a bit different from me this week. There’s no humour and nobody dies horribly (sort of). I’m not sure I like it, it makes me melancholy. Hey ho 🙂

The river flowed sluggishly through the lowland fields beneath the weak light of a watery sun. It had been birthed high in the mountains. It would become part of the great water.

In its travels it saw many things. Trees and grasslands. Mountains and plains. Four-legged beasts and man-things.

Its waters ran red now, red with the blood of many man-things upstream. The river cared little for such things. It was forever. It was constant.

The man-things were temporary. Inconsequential.

The river understood this as it flowed indifferent to Man’s inhumanity toward Man, continuing its long journey to the sea.

Welcome to the the Chain Writing Game Week 3, hosted by Kerrie Ann Salsac. This week’s story is called “A Bloody Monday Morning”. Here is my third and final contribution!

Jenna lay on the grass, trembling. All around her stood the wolves, along with the strange man – wolf? – who had introduced himself as “In’ang’to”.

“What… what’s happening…I don’t understand…” she managed.

“Do not fear, sister. You are dazed – a side effect of your transportation here. You will remember in time.” He held out his hand.

Jenna took it hesitantly. What the hell was going on here?

“We will take you to a place of safety. Come.”

“Safety” – that word burned into her mind and she nodded.

“What about me?” called Jamie from the tree.

“Sorry!” called Jenna. “Survival, you know?”

“What’s that sound?” Jenna had stopped sobbing and was looking toward the back of the cave. It was a kind of scratching, skittering noise.

“I don’t know. This is new,” replied Jamie. “Maybe we should…” she continued, gesturing toward the cave mouth. Jenna stood and scurried over to her.

“Does it look to you like the cave floor is moving?” whispered Jenna.

“That’s not the floor! Run!”

The girls raced out of the cave into the teeth of the approaching storm. Behind them a wave of tiny creatures boiled from the cave.

Ahead of them, a twister began to form.

CWG Week 3 Episode 5

Jenna looked at the new arrival.

“He? Who’s he? Where am I? What’s going…”

“Shush!” whispered the new arrival. “Time to talk later. We need to get out of the open.”

“But…” began Jenna, but the woman was already moving off. Jenna followed, picking at the sliver tattoo.

“Leave it alone!” snapped the woman, glancing back. “You don’t want to mess with that, trust me!”

But could Jenna trust this woman? She had no real choice, she guessed. At least she seemed to have an idea as to what was going on. Determining to keep her wits about her, she followed.

Jorge’s Story

January 10, 2014 30 comments

Welcome to “Jorge’s Story”. Jorge was a character in our latest Chain Writing Game – “Have You Seen Helen?”, hosted by the talented Kerrie Ann Salsac with multiple authors taking part. You can read the whole story here and even download the compilation! Obviously there is some crossover with “Have You Seen Helen” – my thanks go to all the amazing authors who made this possible and to the following for contributing to the scenes containing Jorge which I have drawn upon (and plagiarised some of the dialogue):

Kerrie Ann Salsac
Al
Maryann

I got to wondering about Jorge. The last time we saw him, he’d been shot in the shoulder and had his shin shattered by a Harley motorbike.

Where did he come from? How did he get to this point? What happened to him? Is he really the unluckiest person alive? And most importantly, what is his pain threshold (pretty high as it turns out)?

This little story fills in the blanks. It’s not too gruesome, but small children should not read! It’s more a story of ever-increasing disasters and ridiculousness. I didn’t spend much time editing it, but it’s just a bit of fun 🙂 . Let the mayhem ensue!

No Smoking

January 8, 2014 86 comments

It’s that time of the week again – Friday Fictioneers time (regardless of the fact that it’s not Friday – boo 😦 ). Hosted by the amazingly talented Rochelle, a bunch of us get together to write a (roughly) 100 word story in response to a photo, which this week comes to us courtesy of Dawn Q. Landau.

To read everyone else’s amazing contributions, click here!

I’m in an odd mood this week. I’m not sure if my story is funny or tragic. I suspect it’s tragic but I find it quite amusing. I wonder if I need to seek professional help?

Maybe you should judge for yourselves…

“No Smoking” in the gunpowder store was a given, but Samuel had been doing this job for ten years and he’d never had an accident. The cigarette dropped to the floor as he fell asleep.

The whole top of the mountain blew off.

Newlyweds Sally and Jeff walked hand-in-hand along the beach.

“Is it me or is it getting darker?”

“I think it is. I hope it doesn’t rain.”

“Me too. What’s that whooshing sound?”

The remains of the gunpowder store drove their mangled bodies into the sand. It’s still there to this day. So are Sally and Jeff.

The Chain Writing Game Week 2 Episode 17

Here is another instalment to Kerrie’s Chain Writing Game.

chain-story-week-2

Have You Seen My Wife? – episode 17

The Harley roared to life, and Dennis heard raised voices behind him as he sped off. In his rear-view he could see a crowd of leather-clad bikers pouring out of the bar, heading toward their bikes.

A yell from Trixie pulled his attention back to the road in front of him. He was passing the alley and Jorge was stumbling out, one arm hanging uselessly, blood dripping onto the pavement. Dennis swerved, clipping Jorge’s leg, shattering his shin. Jorge went down.

As Dennis accelerated away, his rear-view revealed police cruisers appearing behind the bikers. He gritted his teeth and accelerated.
