5 Day Challenge – Serenity

July 2, 2015 12 comments

It’s Day Three of the five photos and stories in five days challenge, which Gill over at In Touch with Emma nominated me for. The rules are:

“Post a photo each day for five consecutive days and attach a story to the photo. It can be fiction or non-fiction, a poem or a short paragraph (and each day nominate another blogger for the challenge – I’m not doing that bit).”

A little Haiku (or Haiku-like poem) for today. This is another photo taken at Lydford Gorge.

Drimericks – Swordplay

November 7, 2014 26 comments

I bet you thought I’d forgotten all about “Drimericks” (Drali Limericks), didn’t you?

You were right!

But then I remembered, so here’s another one, along with an accompanying DraliDoodleTM, lovingly crafted by our talented and professional team :-).

There once was a fencer named Gary
Who was quick with the thrust and the parry
But one day on the street
He fell over his feet
And skewered a postman named Barry.

Scewered

If you missed them, don’t forget to check out my previous Drimericks, “Angels” and “Man in a Tank“.

Drimericks – Man in a Tank

September 5, 2014 23 comments

It’s time for another Drali Limerick (Drimerick)! Here’s one about a rather foolish tank owner. As always, it is accompanied by a DraliDoodleTM, professionally drawn by the DraliDoodleTM team.

There once was a soldier named Frank
Who wished to sail off in his tank
The beach was quite sandy
Which turned out quite handy
But on reaching the water he sank.

Drimericks – Angels

August 25, 2014 25 comments

Welcome to my new series – Drali Limericks, or Drimericks! I know it will be a series because I’ve written more than one so far. I’ve rather optimistically categorised this as “Poems” 🙂 . Each one will be accompanied by a beautifully crafted and professionally drawn DraliDoodleTM.

There once was a fellow named Derby
Who went on the rob on his Harley
But he never envisioned
He’d be caught and imprisoned
By Angels and some dude named Charlie.

My Heart’s Desire

February 5, 2014 72 comments

It’s Friday Fictioneers time, folks. Hosted as ever by Rochelle, a hundred or so bloggers write their 100-ish word take on a photo prompt which this week has been supplied by fictioneerer Dawn M. Miller.

To see all the other contributions, click here.

Well folks, I have nothing! Therefore I have composed a “poem”, using a slightly spurious link with the photo – lamps-light-fire. It has no twists, no comedy or dark humour and is, I suppose, vaguely romantic-ish. Not something I do, but since I don’t want to miss out on a week I’m going to publish it anyway. Then we can all just move on.

And weirdly after I finished it I found it was 101 words. What a fluke.

Candle burning in the dark
It calls to me, it calls to me
Sulphur bright, the Devil’s spark
She calls to me, she calls to me.

Eyes like fire, she beckons me
Towards the light, towards the light
My heart’s ensnared, no longer free
Within her light, within her light.

Closer now, I see her face
A face divine, a face divine
Desperate now I quicken pace
To make her mine, to make her mine.

At last she holds me in her arms
Consumed by fire, consumed by fire
No more sorrow, safe from harm
My heart’s desire, my heart’s desire.

Office Irritations Part 2 – Monitors with Attitude

November 24, 2013 8 comments

My computer monitor has attitude.

Not the one on the right. The one on the left. The “primary” display. It feels the need to berate me, before I’ve even had my first cup of coffee.

This is the sight which greets me each morning.

Monitor With Attitude

Why are you being so nasty to me, Mr Monitor?

Why is it telling me this so early in the morning? I haven’t saved any trees. It makes me feel bad. What’s with the guilt trip?

Apparently “super energy saving”, whatever that is, is inactive. Who among you has ever fiddled with the settings on a monitor (apart from “auto-adjust” that is)? Monitor controls and menus are so fiddly I find it’s best to leave them alone, in case everything suddenly goes all blue and you can’t work out how to fix it. Trying to find the energy saving setting seems like a recipe for disaster.

The mere act of using a computer rather than writing everything down means I’m “saving trees”, does it not?  I recycle every week – I’m a good little recycler. Why are you saying such things to me, Mr Monitor?

It tells me this after it has been physically switched off all night. How is that not saving trees? Apart from the fact that, as far as I know, the power station is powered by coal, or possibly uranium. It’s not wood-fired.

Energy-saving monitors aside, don’t forget to recycle!

Recycle!

Save the trees!

The year is 2093
Tommy’s never seen a tree
He knows they’re tall and brown and green
But not a sight he’s ever seen.

People say it’s such a pity
All the world’s become a city
Trees and grass and bubbling brooks
Can only now be found in books.

No horses, cows or dogs or cats
All the food is grown in vats
People crammed in tiny spaces
Life’s a drudge, no happy faces.

The older ones think “Such a shame”
Wondering just who’s to blame
No more trilling sparrow’s song

Nature’s time has long since gone.

(Poem reposted from dralimanonlife.com/2011/10/14/2093/).

Spider Army

November 3, 2013 36 comments

Spider General

I have a fear, a nagging fear
Keeps running through my head
I’m worried there’s a spider army
Underneath my bed.

Spiders On The MoveI’m sure that sometimes I can hear
The spiders at their drill
And just the thought they’re coming out
Can give me such a chill!

I fear one day they’ll sally forth
Parade across my floor
Marching all in single file
To slip beneath my door.

They’ll leave my house but make no sound
On tiny, tiny feet
So no-one hears them coming
As they march off down the street.

Spiders Eat The Wires

They might go in the bakery
And eat up all the bread
Or chew the wires in traffic lights
Until they’re stuck on red!

Spiders At The School

Perhaps they’ll mess up all the bins
By taking off the lids
Or maybe they’ll invade the school
And frighten all the kids.
I must admit I just don’t care,
Don’t care what they attack
As long as all the little guys
Are never coming back!

Spiders No Entry

Amphigory – The Nightmare Coach

August 25, 2013 14 comments

amphigory

An amphigory is a piece of nonsensical writing in verse or, less commonly, prose.  It often parodies a serious piece of writing.

This week’s Prompts for the Promptless, hosted by Rara and The Queen Creative, is all about nonsense! “Yay!” I thought. However, writing nonsense is harder than I thought :-(.

“The Nightmare Coach” starring Jeff and Nigel

A nightmare bound in sparkling lights
A coach trip, off to see the sights!
We’ll drive it here, we’ll drive it there
We’ll burn up gas without a care.

Not this nightmare coach again!
Jeff, old chap, this has to end!
It’s just not good, you need some aid
Your mind, old son, it starts to fade!

And as we go from town to town
I’ll kiss the girls, I’ll shoot the clowns
‘Cos clowns are creepy, don’t you think?
The plastic smiles, the fairground stink.

You’re talking nonsense, Jeff old chap
You’re spouting tripe, what’s up with that?
I think I’ll give the Doc a call
This isn’t right, not right at all.

We’ll drive the country far and wide
As endless as the lapping tide
I’ll eat some shrimp, I’ll drink a keg
Jump off a wall and break my leg.

Doctor? Hi, it’s Nigel here.
There’s something wrong with Jeff, I fear.
Please say you’ll come, and make it fast
I just don’t know how long he’ll last.

And when the trip comes to an end
My teeth begin to gnash and rend
I hate it when the coach is gone
The journey’s end. Here ends my song.

Jeff my friend, please calm you down
The Doctor’s here, no need to frown.
Be at peace, no more to say
Just close your eyes. You’ll be okay.

Well, it was supposed to be funny but it turned out being a little bit sad. Poor Jeff.

I used to be able to write “funny”. On the plus side, this is one of my few fiction pieces in which no-one’s died. Yay me :-).

Chained

This is a follow-up poem to yesterday’s Haiku. Sorry about the picture re-use – I only took the one photo!

buzzard chained

Children of the skies
Ambassadors of freedom
Homes replaced by metal
A legacy of greed
Uneasy pets now
A spectacle for eager eyes
Chained to the earth
No more to fly free
Break your chains, little bird
Break your chains and fly!
