Memories

It’s that time of the week again! What time of the week, I hear you ask? Friday Fictioneers time!

Hosted as always by the talented Rochelle, 100 plus people from around the globe write a story of roughly 100 words in response to a photo, supplied this week by Douglas M. MacIlroy.

To read this week’s other stories, click on Bracken, the little blue froggy.

“What a beautiful day it was today!” exclaimed Samuel.

“What was that, dear?” asked his wife. She smiled to see him relaxing in his den, cosy slippers warming his feet.

“Sitting by the water, watching the boats. We should go out on one of those boats tomorrow!”

“Tomorrow?” Sheila’s face fell. “Oh, Samuel. That was so long ago.”

“What? Nonsense! Who… who are you?”

Sheila turned away sadly, leaving her husband staring at the picture – a memento of their honeymoon. Maybe tomorrow he’d remember where he was. Who she was. For now, she left him lost in their past.

Sharing My World Week 21

June 1, 2014 20 comments

It’s nearly past time to Share My World again! As always the questions have been posed by Cee – go check out her blog!

share-your-world2

If you could make a 15 second speech to the entire world, what would you say?
“Right, that’s it, I’ve had it with you lot. Robbing, stealing, killing each other. Beating each other up, hurting each other. This will not do! I’m going back to Tau Ceti Major III and when I get back I want to see some improvement. Clear? Good. See you in a century or two.”

(Disappears in the sparkle of the teleporter beam.)

If you could take a photograph, paint a picture or write a story of any place in the world, what and where would it be?
This is a tricky one! I think I’d like to do a tour of New Zealand with my camera. While I’m there I’ll stake out any likely Hobbit haunts to see if I can grab some snaps of the little guys going about their lives.

If you had to spend one weekend alone in a single store but could remove nothing, which store would you pick?
I guess if I’m going to be stuck in a shop all weekend, it will have to be one full of games consoles to play on. I’m sure that will keep me occupied. I’m hoping that this shop also has a cafeteria and bathroom facilities!

If you were given a boat or yacht today, what would you name it?  (You can always sell the yacht later)
I’d name it the “Cash Cow” because once I’ve sold it I’ll be quids in! I’d probably sail it around a bit first, though (which would probably result in it sinking as I don’t know how to sail).

See you next week!

Ashes to Ashes

May 30, 2014 61 comments

It’s Friday today and that means it’s Friday Fictioneers time! As I write this there are already nearly 100 stories of roughly 100 words each up on the link page, can you believe? I was going to post my story yesterday, but I just got a PlayStation 4 so I’ve been a bit distracted 🙂

This week’s photo has been contributed by Friday Fictioneerer Jennifer Pendergast and the whole challenge is ably hosted as always by Rochelle. To read the other stories for this week, click on Bracken (the little blue froggy).

Randolph raced through the shade towards the welcoming light beyond the archway. Three months he’d been a captive. Abused, mistreated. His neck hurt; he rubbed the wounds as he ran.

And the hunger! They’d given him a sickly red liquid to drink, but always the hunger returned.

What had they done to him?

He burst into the sunlight, his shout of triumph becoming a scream as his skin blistered. His pursuers stopped short of the archway, staying in the shade. Flames consumed his body and his view of freedom disappeared as his eyeballs liquefied.

His ashes blew across the field on the summer breeze, free at last.

The bluebells have gone away for this year 😦 but some more random flowers have arrived!

It turns out the pot in the back didn’t have daffodils in after all.

Sharing My World Week 20

May 26, 2014 12 comments

Right on the verge of Share Your World Week 21, here I am with Week 20, hosted as always by Cee over at her photography blog. Since I’m running late(r) this week, I’d better get stuck in.

share-your-world2

If you could go back and visit any time period, what time would you travel to and why?
All of time is my oyster – this is quite a decision. I could see the dinosaurs! Watch knights in shining armour riding around the countryside. Visit the stomping grounds of Dickens and Shakespeare. Visit ancient Rome or Greece.

I’ve made my decision! I shall travel back to a week last Saturday. My pizza was particularly well baked and I watched a double episode of Stargate SG-1 while I was eating.

Ah, halcyon days.

If you could have three wishes granted for you alone, what would they be?  This is a time for you to dream and have fun.
Hmm, I’m good at dreaming but not so good at having fun.

I left this one to the end. I’ve still got nothing. I’m not the sort of person to grant wishes to, sorry.

Wanting something to quench your thirst, what would you drink?
Mmm, Diet Coke. Accept no substitutes! A tasty can of chemical goodness. Nicely chilled, of course. Warm drinks don’t quench my thirst.

Or a nice cold fruit smoothie. Goodbye teeth! Welcome, sugar overload! Tasty, though.

If you watch TV what are your favourite three television shows?
Well, this is a tricky one to answer. There are way more than three! My dream list would contain such classics as Dr Who (that’s a no-brainer), Stargate, anything in the crime vein (CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds, Dexter, Castle and so on), Bones (for sure), anything medical-related (ER, Grey’s Anatomy, Casualty, Holby City), Buffy, Angel, Lost Girl. I’m sure by now you can see the sort of stuff I like to watch!

See you all again next time.

Get Orf Moi Laaand!

May 21, 2014 87 comments

It’s fake Friday and therefore time for Friday Fictioneers! This week’s photo, to which we are challenged to write roughly 100 words, has been contributed by Erin Leary and the whole shebang is hosted as always by the talented Rochelle.

The story I wrote for this week was nearly 200 words even once edited so I’ve done an altered cut-down version. I’ll keep the original and maybe post it some other time. No depth to this one, just a bit of silliness 🙂 .

“Don’t even think about it,” warned the farmer as he saw Bobby eying the fence. “That land belongs to Mad Frank.”

Bobby laughed and leapt over. “Hey, the grass really is greener over here!”

The farmer shook his head sadly.

A hillock opened, a device shot up and there was a loud roar. Bobby’s head exploded, spraying gore in all directions. As his lifeless body toppled over, a second hillock opened and a loudspeaker appeared.

“Get orf moi laaand!” it roared. “You have ten seconds to comply!”

“Classy. Missile first, then the warning,” mused the farmer, wiping brain matter from his face. “Real nutter, that Mad Frank.”

Sharing My World Week 19

May 18, 2014 21 comments

It’s time for Share Your World, a weekly series hosted by Cee over at her photography blog. Let’s dive straight in!

share-your-world2

Do you prefer shopping or going to a park?
Yay, shopping! Hunting around for a parking place. Traipsing around a busy town. Pushing my way past a billion people. Basking in the noise. Breathing in the fumes.

No, wait. That’s not right.

I’m changing my answer to “going to a park”.

What is the highest score you’ve ever made in bowling?  Actual or virtually played.
With or without the buffers up? 🙂

It’s been years since I went bowling. I can’t handle the (real or imagined) smug looks on other people’s faces as my ball consistently falls in the gutter. Plus it’s very expensive, like £4 per person per game.

I think the best I ever did was around 160 or something. I can bowl a “good” game, then the next game I hardly hit anything.

Name the foreign countries you’ve been to.
I’m not particularly well travelled. I’m probably the only person I know who hasn’t been to Spain or Egypt 😦

Germany – two school exchanges, worked there for a year, went there for a friend’s wedding, went to a conference.

Switzerland – weekend trip while I was living in Germany.

Republic of Ireland – worked there for four years.

France – three day business meeting. Caught the ferry back to England after living in Germany.

Belgium – drove through the edge of it on the way back from living in Germany.

The Netherlands – one day business meeting.

Wales – holiday, conferences.

Scotland – holidays.

And last, but not least, as I’m Cornish I am including England!

Describe your own outlook on life in seven words or less.
It happens. Deal with it. Or not.

That’s all for this week. Have a great week everyone!

Daily Prompt: Worldly Encounters

May 16, 2014 18 comments

Wow, I haven’t done one of these for a while!

Worldly EncountersThe friendly, English-speaking extraterrestrial you run into outside your house is asking you to recommend the one book, movie, or song that explains what humans are all about. What do you pick?

So this extraterrestrial’s friendly is it? Wants to learn ALL ABOUT US does it? Hmm, I’m suspicious.

Even if he/she/it is telling the truth, what about its friends? For this reason I pick the film “Independence Day”.

This would serve as a warning to keep them civil, just in case they get any funny ideas about making our planet (or what’s left of it) “their own”.

They’ll soon see that if they step out of line, we’ll stuff a USB key in their mother ship’s dashboard and infect their little green asses with viruses and trojans and maybe a bunch of spam selling “enlargening equipment”. And their shields will fail as well.

Now that we’re clear on the ground rules, “Welcome to Earth!”

Six on the Sixth – May

May 16, 2014 18 comments

It’s not the sixth, but this challenge is open all month! Yay!

Adam Ickes provides six prompt words and the goal is to write little six word “stories”. We don’t need to use all the prompt words.

I’ve actually done two this month because in the first one I’ve stretched the rules to breaking point. I’ve used the six words but not in six sentences as such. However, I’ve broken it into six lines of six words each. My second offering is more in keeping with the rules, I think.

To read other people’s submissions, click on Bracken (the little blue froggy). I named him during Friday Fictioneers yesterday and I’m hoping it will catch on, as little blue froggy works so hard to link up our stories and he deserves a name.

The six prompt words Adam has suggested for this month are:

rainbow
flask
war
tiny
insane
pink

Denial

Rainbows danced crazily through his head.
He drank deeply from his flask,
fuelling the war raging within him.
A tiny part of him asked
Am I going insane? The answer,
“Course not, I’m in the pink!”

Okay, the last line was a bit rubbish, but what am I supposed to do with “pink”?

Rainbow
Beautiful bands of crazily coruscating colour.

Flask
Chicken soup, still warm, sustained him.

War
Tinker tailor soldier sailor. All dead.

Tiny
Man mountain. Friends called him Tiny.

Insane
Wibble wibble hatstand flying cows ptang!

Pink
Noooo! My best shirt! Laundry accident.

Counting Sheep

May 15, 2014 48 comments

It may not be Friday, but it’s certainly time for Friday Fictioneers! Hosted every week by the talented Rochelle, a whole host of people write a roughly 100 word story in response to a photo, which this week has been contributed by fellow Fictioneerer Sandra Crook.

To read the other stories for this week click on the little blue froggy, whom I have named “Bracken”.

“Look out! Run for your lives and don’t look back!”

“What? Are you not asleep yet? I thought you were counting sheep?”

“Yeah, awesome zombie sheep! They’ve surrounded a car and they’re eating the occupants. There’s blood and body parts everywhere. They’re bleating ‘baa baa baaaarains!’”

“Okay, this isn’t working. Try counting something else.”

“Like what?”

“Something a little more soothing. A little more sedate. Like cows. Try counting cows. I need to sleep myself, I’ve got a meeting tomorrow.”

“Cows it is then.”

Ten minutes later…

“Woah! Run!”

“Ugh. What is it now?!”

“Awesome vampire cows!”
